Choosing background colour?

Hi, Is it possible or would it be possible to select the padding or spacing colour? At the moment our font characters are coming out with darkened edges due to the black colour used for padding. Filling out the pad area would be fine, but we have button images which get in the way. I'm using BMFont both at work and for my personal projects and find it really useful. Thanks! Alex
