I'm a level designer, no not in the biz just for fun but I really want to get into the game industry. I want to become a level designer in the game industry. Must I know any types of programming or would others create my engines for me to create upon?

Here is some work I did a few years back using Hammer(half life engine)

People have done far worse for money... Just like any other business, if you hire them, they have to do the work you hired them for. Now if you're thinking people will do it for free.... well... good luck. No matter what you do in the game business, having knowledge of how the game actually goes together is going to make it alot easier for you to work within the constraints of the engine... without having to constantly redo your work.

I'm not mean, I just like to get to the point.

1. I want to become a level designer in the game industry.
2. Must I know any types of programming
3. or would others create my engines for me to create upon?

1. Great. How old are you, got a degree, how's your portfolio (besides that one link you provided), where do you live, IE what city? http://www.sloperama.com/advice/lesson27.htm
2. No, but you do need to be able to use a scripting language.
3. Yes. It's called "specialization." Level designers aren't engine programmers. Read http://www.sloperama.com/advice/m69.htm and http://archives.igda.org/breakingin/

thank you for all the info Tom. I have a massive profolio, just don't have the money to go to school. Ive learned most of what I know by myself. If I were to learn everything I can by myself including coding does anyone think its possible to get into the game industry without a college degree? >_<

Someone does. How old are you? If you have a "massive" portfolio and a good resume, you might be able to get in. What jobs have you held?

Well I just recently decided I wanted to be part of the industry, never really thought about it as a career as I have been selling cars for 3 years. I would just do it in my free time, have been for years. I am 23 years old.
OK, well. You've held down a car salesman job for 3 years. That shows that you understand the meaning of "job." But you still haven't answered all my questions, and I don't have any clues that you've read those articles yet. If you live in West Podunk, North Dakota, then you have to move before you can hope to get hired. You should continue working on your portfolio, and start networking while residing in a game hotbed. Use gamedevmap and gameindustrymap to identify a target area.

I live in Arizona, I have read bits and pieces, been busy. By networking you mean find a team that is working on a project and try to land a position?
Read more than bits and pieces. Ask afterwards. Click the FAQs link above.
