First, the Sigma button deletes half the paragraph you were typing, and inserts your equation surrounded by \( and \) (not visible in the preview). And it stays that way in the post, no math symbols or anything.
Has it always been this way or they just broke it and never bothered to fix?

Looks like you are right, I am really surprised by that 
. Most people here know programming and would type the math as code:
So something like Power of two would be Variable*Variable.
Or Pow(Variable, 2).

I think so, no one ever needed it so it went unnoticed. Personally this is the first time I even tried using it.
Maybe the mods will fix it now that they know of it.
Thanks for reporting, it must have broken with a recent update. @khawk will hopefully be able to figure it out.
Umm apparently it does work, but takes ages to process? And the one in wisiwyg editor doesn't work, either.
